Create your own Cloud server on Raspberry Pi with OwnCloud

OwnCloud is an all-in-one solution for creating cloud storage, calendar and contacts servers. OwnCloud allows you to share files through an easy-to-use web interface, similar to OneDrive from Microsoft and Google Drive.

To make our OwnCloud installation even more robust, we’re going to use a RAID volume for our storage. I’m going to assume you’ve followed my previous tutorial ‘Create a RAID Volume on Raspberry Pi‘ first, although this is not necessary.

Create a portable battery and solar powered Raspberry Pi Zero web server

I asked the community on Reddit what tutorials people wanted me to write, and one, in particular, caught my imagination. ‘Thaslegendary’ said:

“A guide on how to power raspberry pi zero with 4 AA battery would help me a lot”

This really got me thinking. Can I build a portable web server that runs off battery alone, topped up with a solar panel? There’s only one way to find out. At the time of writing this, the Raspberry Pi Zero is running on a solar power bank and is therefore completely off the grid.

Nginx on Raspberry Pi

Dingleberry Pi now powered by Nginx

To coincide with my three part tutorial, the site is now powered by Nginx instead of Apache2 on a Raspberry Pi web server – and the results speak for themselves. I’ve observed a 10% increase in speed for queries, and a 42% increase in homepage load. Pingdom tools has also marked an improvement, with the site being quicker than 88% of sites tested, up from the previous 72%.

Tutorial – Install Nginx and PHP on Raspbian

This is the first in a three part tutorial series on how to install and run NGINX on a Raspberry Pi. The first concentrates on installing and configuring Nginx web server and PHP on Raspbian OS, the second talks about installing MySQL server on Raspberry Pi, the third will walk you through installing WordPress on Nginx.

For many, Apache2 has become too bloated, and uses more resources than it needs to. Nginx is a very light-weight web server, that works great on a Raspberry Pi.
